We were heading to a new restaurant for brunch on a rainy Saturday last Spring when we were overtaken by a mass of people at MIT marching for Science. I was struck by their sense of urgency. It became absolutely clear to me that the time to preserve what we have in Academic Medicine is NOW.
Over the past twelve months, we have worked towards developing a platform and strategies for ensuring clinical excellence. In that connection, we formed The Leslie S.T. Fang Foundation, a 501-(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the specific intent to make the one-on- one physician-patient experience the best that it can be.
To this end, the Foundation is dedicated to bettering the life of people on the front line of clinical interactions. The Foundation will raise money to nurture clinical excellence and to facilitate clinical education. While these appear to be the buzz words that every Foundation would use, we have a very specific mission:
□ Build a platform around clinical excellence
□ Ensure retention and recruitment of the best clinical talent
□ Enrich the lives of clinicians and teachers on the front line
□ Create a for-profit Dialysis Unit of the future where patient care, clinical education and renal research will all be highly profiled
The Foundation is separate from the Massachusetts General Hospital because of the added flexibility we need to support endeavors outside of the Hospital.
We implore you to contribute to the promotion of clinical and academic excellence at a time when healthcare, education and science are all under undue pressures.
